Why It Matters If We Love Conspiracy Theories

The X-Files is returning to TV for a six-part “event,” and even if you’re like me (and have never seen a single episode of the hugely popular 1993-2002 series), its return raises some interesting questions. No, this is not me going all Fox Mulder on you and stirring the pot on some new conspiracy theory. And yes, I know who the show’s Scully and Mulder characters are, even though I never saw the show. I don’t live under a rock! The most serious question it raises for me, and for Public Radio......

America, Do We Have a (VMA) Problem?

MTV’s 2015 Video Music Awards was the most tweeted (non-Super Bowl) event since…wait for it…tracking ever began! Really? Even if it were only the most tweeted event since this year’s Super Bowl, I would say we have a problem. I mean, I rarely write from a negative place, and genuinely hate sounding as curmudgeonly as this. But, you know, a lot of things have happened this year – good and bad – which would have, I hope, generated more tweets than the VMA’s! When the?“most tweeted” status is earned by a show......

Insights on Bruce Jenner: Embrace Your Reality

Once tabloids and gossip sites breathlessly started publishing pictures of Bruce Jenner in a dress, it seemed only a matter of time before our national conversation would acknowledge a kind of “transgender moment.” When the former Olympic great and Kardashian reality show patriarch agreed to be interviewed by Diane Sawyer, many were concerned that the broadcast would be a showcase for the sensational – or otherwise belittle the lives of people whose gender differs from the one generally assumed for them at birth. This fear is rooted, in part, in a history......

Lifesaving Words Sent 'From Auschwitz with Love'

Imagine writing love letters from Auschwitz. That’s exactly what Welsh soldier Ron Jones did. Captured in 1942 by the Nazis as a British prisoner of war, Jones penned heartfelt messages to his sweetheart, Gwladys; the two met as teenagers and experienced “love at first sight.” From his darkest days as a laborer in Camp E715 at Auschwitz, Jones poured out his heart in writing. And you can see him read his letters in the BBC documentary below, From Auschwitz With Love. The messages capture Jones’ unwavering devotion: “I am, like you dear,......
