Innovating Race in America

Do you know who Dixon White is? The proud, self-proclaimed “redneck” is a former racist – and a YouTube phenomenon. His viscerally honest, rough, intense, cuss-filled (NSFW), incredibly discomforting video “I’m a Redneck and I Love America” has already gone viral with millions of views. In the clip, he picks apart “a White supremacist culture that caters to White people,” calls for Americans who aren’t people of color to “reject White privilege” and “to take some responsibility for undoing racism.” And he rails against hollow claims that we live in a post-racial......

Where Is the Help Nepal Needs?

From Odyssey Networks’ Faith on the Record series: With dramatic news happening here in the U.S. all week, our mainstream press isn’t covering Nepal’s dire situation effectively. In terms of earthquake relief, with thousands dead and injured, the overwhelmed Nepalese government and military aren’t being effective in helping hundreds of thousands of displaced survivors. But waiting for those systems won’t work. “We waste time thinking about the ‘ideal’ responses, as opposed to: What are the do-able, real responses? Where can I make a difference?” Watch my video for more insight and discussion.......

The Violent Reaction to Women of the Wall

From Odyssey Networks’ Faith on the Record series: Religious freedom is in the news again, as Israelis rebel against rules about where and how women can pray. This week, some at the Western Wall in Jerusalem reacted violently when members of the advocacy group Women of the Wall defied traditional (gender-based) restrictions on public expressions of faith. An angry riot reportedly ensued among the ultra-Orthodox witnesses, and I thought about this: “Why would people behave that way? What was going on? Where does love of your fellow Jew, also a tradition, factor......

The Aaron Hernandez Trial: A Just Verdict?

From Odyssey Networks’ Faith on the Record series: The jury has returned a guilty verdict against Aaron Hernandez, ending his trial for the murder of Odin Lloyd, and sentencing the onetime NFL star to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Were jurors too lenient, or too harsh? Was justice served? “Are people fed up with misbehaving professional athletes, and punishing them more aggressively?” Watch my video for more insight and discussion.   Odyssey Networks tells the stories of faith in action changing the world for the better. Their stories explore......

The Push to Ban 'Conversion Therapy'

From Odyssey Networks’ Faith on the Record series: The Oval Office has issued a statement officially supporting the movement to ban “conversion therapy,” especially as practiced on homosexual and transgender kids in the United States. In most cases, the “treatment” is either self-imposed, or imposed upon minors by family members who believe for religious reasons that the child/teen can become (and should become) heterosexual. “The use of conversion therapy is not a gay rights issue. It’s a public health issue, and very much in the domain of the president of the federal......

Celebrate National Poetry Month

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? Inaugurated in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets, National Poetry Month is touted as “the largest literary celebration in the world.” Writers, teachers and librarians throughout the United States band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. For the organization’s annual event this month, luminaries in the creative arts (the 2015 list includes choreographer Judith Jamison, songwriter Sam Beam, actor Holly Hunter and chef Anita Lo) will gather in New York City to share their favorite poems at......

'Normal' Isn't All It's Cracked Up to Be

Here in the U.S., April is National Autism Awareness Month. I’m reminded of a day not very long ago when I found myself googling the word “faith” – as I do from time to time, to see what undiscovered things I might learn or find inspiring – and the following amazing video came up in the results. Faith Jegede Cole is a Washington, D.C., resident (by way of London), who advocates for causes including free speech, civil rights and women’s equality. But what she’s most known for is raising awareness about the......

Why We Should Be Talking About Religious Freedom

From Odyssey Networks’ Faith on the Record series:?Lawmakers in Indiana and Alabama are facing a firestorm after they enacted new legislation around religious freedoms, which critics say is designed to discriminate against LGBT citizens. In contentious debates, there has got to be for all of our sakes, a way to combine passionate advocacy with spiritual and intellectual humility. Not paralysis, not silence, but genuine humility that recognizes the dignity of those on the other side. For more on why it’s important to talk about this issue, watch my video discussion ?below: Odyssey......

The Short Film 'Gift' Teaches Appreciation of All We're Given

I dare you to watch Daniel Yam’s short film Gift and not be moved. I don’t think it’s possible. The story, set in Singapore, depicts a tense father-son relationship and conveys a strong point of view about what it means to be rich. I wonder: Is the definition of wealth actually not about how much you have, but about how much you give?     On the viral popularity of Gift, director Yam said, “I have learned that a well-told story can resonate very widely and very loudly.” His film explores how......

Anguish About the Germanwings Plane: Where Was God?

From Odyssey Networks’ Faith on the Record series: As horrifying details emerge about the cause of the Germanwings plane crash, an unbearable sense of shared, collective trauma grows. “In a moment of pain, any question has to be safe to ask,” including this one: Where was God? Consider with me how those who lost loved ones may find meaning in the tragedy, in the long hours, days and years of grief that lie ahead for them. Watch my video below for more insight and discussion. Odyssey Networks tells the stories of faith......
