Why Do You Celebrate Presidents Day?

Happy Presidents Day! What exactly do we celebrate today? Is it George Washington’s birthday (actually February 22nd)? Abraham Lincoln’s (February 12th)? Or the U.S. presidency in general? The answer is: All of the above.

You can find out about the history of Presidents Day here. In modern-day America, it’s valid to wonder whether the holiday is actually anything other than a day off for some, and an excuse for midwinter sales on cars and furniture.

Recently, I had the extraordinary experience of seeing the documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell at an evening in honor of Outward Bound Peacebuilding – a remarkable organization whose mission is to inspire leaders in divided societies to work together to build peace. The film (named Best Documentary at 2008′s Tribeca Film Festival) is a testament to the transformative power of women’s voices.
