Can Complainers Be Cured?

About ten years ago I was in a taxi with Elliot, the calmest of my five younger brothers. Traffic was at a standstill, and I was complaining about how late I was going to be for a meeting, and how impossible it was to get around in New York City. Elliot turned to me, and said something that’s become one of the most usable pieces of wisdom I’ve ever received: “Relax. It doesn’t pay to complain about what you can’t control.” Complaining without doing anything is often a security blanket used to......

The Packaging of 2014: What's 'Like' Got to Do With It?

The web is awash with collections of images that attempt to sum up the past year.? And what news sites are doing for global events, Facebook is doing for your life. In Memory of Leibel

My teacher, colleague, and friend – Leonard “Leibel” Fein – died this past Thursday at the age of 80. You can read the New York Times obituary and the many tributes that have appeared in the last few days to learn about the myriad accomplishments of this brilliant, passionate, eloquent, poetic, mischievous, funny, idealistic, realistic, prophetic, relentless, energetic, builder, writer, speaker, lover, and truth-teller. He......

Here's to Intergenerational Friends

In life, the most common friendships we form are with our peers – people who see the world as we do, and who are in the same age bracket. This is understandable; we meet most people at school or at work. But is there a certain limitation to surrounding ourselves with only those people who are very similar to us? To quote Albert Einstein, “If you only talk to people like you, you’ll never learn anything new.” When it comes to odd-couple friendships that run deep, I can’t help but think of......

When a Friend Is Suffering, How Do You Help?

How do you comfort someone going through a really hard time in life? Recently, I received an email from someone describing how his very good friend’s 42 year-old daughter (a woman with two young children, age 4 and 6 – his grandchildren) was diagnosed last year with cancer and just entered hospice. This man lost his only son 12 years ago in an auto accident. And on top of all this, his brother, with whom he’s extremely close, just had major heart surgery. He asked me if The Wisdom Daily had any......
